Best ways to photograph a wedding in the heat

We all love the sunshine - right?

Absolutely we do! But photographing in bright sunshine, in the heat of the day, isn’t always a photographer’s friend, especially at weddings. Let me explain my thoughts behind why I’m not always jumping for joy on really sunny days

Little girl playing in the sunshine

As a regular photographer of country weddings, both at venues and more frequently in marques, I often describe myself as akin to a farmer – keeping an eye on the prevailing weather forecast. While I’m always grateful for a dry day, bright sunshine isn’t always a photographer’s best friend. And don’t get me started on a hot and therefore often humid wedding day!

There's always a work around

We can always find a work around that results in all the photographs you’ve planned, often for months. And that’s where I come in. I always take time before I photograph a wedding to do a recce of both the ceremony and reception venues around the time of the wedding. It gives me time to see where the sun will be, and where it won’t be! The difference just 20 minutes makes can be huge on a hot and sunny day.

Group photos in dappled shade to avoid too much sun

Rather than worry about overheating, having grumpy family and friends, sticky make-up or an ever increasing pollen count (I always have anti-histamine on me for emergencies), I will always have a ‘plan B’ up my sleeve for you. Whether that’s finding a beautiful shady spot for your couples portraits or using off camera flash to overcome harsh sunlight.  We can nearly always delay a few key photos for an hour or so because we’ve allowed for that in our planning, something I’ve written about in my journal already.

I’m here to b your problem solver and I hope this helps allay fears about there being too much sunshine on your wedding day
